Investing Time vs Spending Time: How I Start My Day in Social

Are you starting your day with the correct mindset?

A friend of mine asked me the other day how I spend my day in social which led to the more important question: How do I START my day in social? To be honest I used to dive into the big three equally each morning, but as my bandwidth for all three started to dwindle I was forced to quickly optimize the time I spent and gravitate towards the one with the most value for me specifically.

Here’s what I found:

Checking in on LinkedIn as I start my day I found that Paypal is developing software that will allow users to pay for goods and services with their fingerprint (Informed), how to think of SEO as less of a marketing product and more of a marketing feature (Educated), and how themovie magic around the Oscars can be applied to creating great content (Inspired).

On the other hand, by checking in with Facebook first thing this morning I found that Living Social has a sale on Bluetooth Shower Speakers (Daily Deal), my friend loves the 70 degree weather here in San Francisco (Random Observation), and that Talking Head’s frontman David Byrne has recorded a version of Biz Markie’s “Just a Friend”.

See where this is going?

I am not knocking Facebook here as I do in fact spend time there engaging with friends and sharing updates from my music and photography blog among other things, but the point I am making is that there is a time and a place for both of these social networks in my life. I ask myself this question; Am I spending time or investing time with a social network? With Facebook I tend to spend, with LinkedIn it’s more of an investment.

I prefer to start my day with a real-time newspaper personalized with the topics that matter most to me to be better at what I do. This includes the topics that are resonating with my professional network, the blogs that I follow, and the top news of the day based on my interests. I will check in with Facebook around lunch time and join the watercooler conversation throughout the rest of the day.
