I’ve been flying the flag for Warrior Soul for more than 30 years, and I’ll never understand how this band didn’t become absolutely massive.
Kory Clarke is one of rock ‘n’ roll’s great frontmen. A poet, a punk, a political firebrand and a glorious fucking lunatic. And Warrior Soul have always been one of those bands that deserve far more recognition than they’ve ever received.
Saturday night at Camden’s Underworld was another reminder of why I love them so much.
Celebrating 35 years of Drugs, God and the New Republic, Warrior Soul ripped through a catalogue of songs that sound just as angry, relevant and necessary today as they did back in 1991. “The Answer,” “Hero,” “The Wasteland” and that magnificent title track. These songs still hit like a sledgehammer.
There’s something special about watching Kory Clarke command a small, sweaty London club. He’s raw, unpredictable, completely unapologetic and still has more rock ‘n’ roll running through his veins than most bands half his age.
Warrior Soul should have ruled the fucking world. In my book, they still do.
Long live Kory Clarke. Long live Warrior Soul.
